In education, we often see problematic use cases for ChatGPT, such as a guest speaker or first draft generator. Apple seemingly wants to do worse.
Apple thinks its ChatGPT integration is perfect for…get this…generating bedtime stories for children. As actor, filmmaker, and author Justine Bateman said, “Pawn off using your imagination, and also spending time with your kid at bedtime.”
A bedtime story? Really? After the “Crush” iPad ad debacle, it is alarming to see more evidence that Apple views creativity as a problem to be solved.

While we’re at it, why do so many tech demos look and sound like this?
I hope ChatGPT-generated bedtime stories strike you as terrible without me going into too much depth. If it does not, please consider the words of professor and filmmaker Sahra Bhimji.
My favorite children’s book is The Monster At The End Of This Book.
I shudder to imagine stories and children’s books such as The Monster At The End Of This Book replaced with generated text. Children deserve stories written and created by people with purpose and intention, not low-quality generated text made possible by plagiarized content.
We could rely on ChatGPT-generated bedtime stories, or we could:
Dramatically raise the minimum wage so parents do not need to work two or three jobs to survive.
Fully fund public libraries.
Value human-written authentic text.
Which sounds better?
